English Translation of the Terms and Conditions of Sale for a Cybersecurity Software

23 February 2022 - News

We were recently engaged to translate from French into English the general terms and conditions of sale (CGV) of a software solution developed by a French publisher specializing in cybersecurity.

A Tool for Monitoring Digital Vulnerabilities

The software enables client companies to:

  • monitor vulnerabilities across their digital platforms,

  • access a customized dashboard, and

  • benefit from technical support structured around a clearly defined scope of services.

The contract also set out the terms of server maintenance as well as the rules applicable to the protection of personal data.

A Legal and Technical Translation with No Compromise on Readability

This assignment involved translating a document that combined:

  • contractual language,

  • IT terminology, and

  • regulatory references, particularly regarding personal data.

We took special care to align the terminology with contract law standards for software agreements in English, while keeping the style clear and accessible to an international audience—many of whom are not lawyers. As with our translation of a tender offer agreement, the challenge was to convey the contractual scope without weighing down the reading—a requirement equally present in arbitration and legal translation.

📌 Key Contextual Equivalents from this Project

  • outil de surveillance → monitoring tool

  • vulnérabilités sur les plateformes numériques du client → vulnerabilities on the client’s digital platforms

  • tableau de bord personnalisé → customized dashboard

  • périmètre des services → scope of services

  • protection des données à caractère personnel → personal data protection

  • maintenance des serveurs → maintenance on the servers

❓ FAQ: translating cybersecurity software terms and conditions

What does the French abbreviation CGV refer to?

CGV stands for conditions générales de vente, the general terms and conditions of sale. In this project, they governed a cybersecurity software solution and set out the scope of services, server maintenance arrangements and the rules applicable to personal data protection.

What made this translation both legal and technical?

The document combined contractual language, IT terminology and regulatory references, particularly on personal data. The translation had to align with English contract-law standards for software agreements while keeping the wording clear for an international, often non-legal, audience.

How are the technical terms rendered into English?

"Outil de surveillance" becomes "monitoring tool", "tableau de bord personnalisé" becomes "customized dashboard", and "périmètre des services" becomes "scope of services". "Protection des données à caractère personnel" is rendered as "personal data protection".

Why does readability matter in this kind of contract translation?

Because many readers are not lawyers, the contractual scope must be conveyed without weighing down the text. The same balance between precision and clarity applies across related work, from software agreements to tender offer agreements and arbitration documents.
