French Translation of the conditions générales de vente of a U.S. Automotive Supplier

21 May 2025 - News

We were recently commissioned to translate from English into French the conditions générales de vente (CGV) of the European subsidiary of a U.S. company active in hydraulic equipment and power transmission systems for the automotive industry.

📑 A standardized contractual framework, adapted to the European market

The company’s standard terms and conditions of sale govern all commercial relations with distributor and industrial clients.
The translation covered, in particular:

  • the definitions of the parties (seller / buyervendeur / acquéreur),

  • the ordering process (quotation, orderdevis, commandes),

  • risk and title transfer (risk and titlerisques et propriété),

  • legal compliance (legal complianceconformité),

  • and personal data protection through an integrated privacy notice (déclaration relative au respect de la vie privée).

⚖️ A mission at the crossroads of commercial law and industry

This project required a dual approach:

  • legal rigor, to ensure the enforceability of the translated clauses,

  • technical precision, to reflect industry and logistics terminology.

We ensured that the clauses were adapted to French contractual practice without altering the legal force of the original agreement.

📌 Key contextual equivalents

❓ FAQ: Translating U.S. terms and conditions of sale into French

Why are "standard terms and conditions of sale" rendered as conditions générales de vente?

Because the CGV are the established French framework governing commercial relations with distributor and industrial clients. The equivalence preserves the document's function while aligning it with French contractual practice rather than a literal calque.

What makes this automotive-supplier project demanding?

It sits at the crossroads of commercial law and industry. The translator must guarantee the enforceability of each clause (legal rigor) while accurately reflecting hydraulic and power-transmission terminology (technical precision), without altering the legal force of the original.

How is "risk and title" transfer handled in the French version?

It becomes risques et propriété, covering both the passing of risk and of ownership over the goods. This clause is contractually pivotal, so the rendering must be exact and consistent throughout the conditions of sale.

How does an embedded privacy notice affect the translation?

The integrated privacy notice (déclaration relative au respect de la vie privée) brings personal-data protection into the contract. It requires the translator to keep data-protection wording coherent with the surrounding commercial and legal-compliance clauses.
